About Us
Greetings from James Mainwaring, a passionate and experienced saxophonist and teacher based in Leeds. With over fifteen years of professional experience and a background in Jazz studies at Leeds Conservatoire (LCon) and a PhD in Music from the University of York, I have had the privilege of recording albums and touring internationally with esteemed artists and bands.
Teaching has always been a rewarding part of my journey. As a part-time principal lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire and an associate at the University of York, I have the opportunity to nurture the talents of aspiring musicians. With twelve years of private teaching experience, I have guided students through their grades, prepared them for auditions at prestigious music institutions, and provided a supportive environment for those pursuing the saxophone as a hobby. I have also collaborated on various education projects with organisations such as Jazz North, NYMAZ, Richmond Jam, and LCon Saturday School.
In 2022, I established North Leeds Sax Lessons, a welcoming platform that caters to individuals of all ages and skill levels. Whether you prefer face-to-face lessons or the convenience of online sessions, we are here to accommodate your needs. We embrace a wide range of saxophone styles, including jazz, funk, pop, classical, and even DJ accompaniment. While working towards ABRSM grades is optional, our focus is on empowering you to learn the saxophone in a way that aligns with your preferences. Whether you choose to read sheet music, explore playing by ear and improvisation, or combine both approaches, we tailor your musical journey to suit your aspirations.

I am personally committed to teaching students at all levels and demonstrate great care in matching new students with the most suitable teacher when necessary.
